I’m a senior now!

Hello Everyone!  Your favorite dog blogger is back!

Keeping my peeps informed!

Today is my 9th Birthday!  I am officially a “senior” now!!

First off, I want to say how happy I am that my grandpa Stu continues to get better and stronger every day!  We share the same date of birth, 70 years apart, so we have a special bond. Happy 79th Birthday Grampa Stu!   I said lots of prayers that he would get better, because I really enjoy going for walks with him.  He is a fast walker, and I have a need for speed!

Keeping my peeps informed!

The last two years, we have been able to get together for our birthday, and have treats and presents.  This year they were unable to make it down to Florida, so cake will have to wait!

However I did get some treats and presents.  My mom went all out and put everything in a brown paper bag….but it is what’s inside that matters to me!  I love opening gifts.  Once again, I received a multi-squeaker toy…my favorite!  I promptly ripped out 4 squeakers, and then took a nap! (after all, I am a senior now…wonder if I will be getting fed earlier ….?!)

My parents have not been up to much, which works for me.  That means I don’t have to spend long days all by myself.  My mom gets up early to exercise, so I get up as well, and fling toys by her feet.  She has to stop and throw the balls out of the way, so I get about 30 minutes of exercise as well!  Keeps us both in shape!  My parents have also been taking me on daily walks, but this RV Park is small, so I get bored going in circles.  Plus, this year there are a lot of other dogs here, which I don’t like.

getting my exercise

It has rained a lot this year in Florida, which has caused a lot of mounds of fire ants around the park.  They keep biting me, and I keep ending up getting baths, because of all the itching it has caused.  Now my parents have put the ‘cone of shame’ on me, to try and keep me from scratching.  I hate it, but they promised not to put it on outside, so the other dogs won’t make fun of me!

Cone of Shame!

When it is sunny, I take advantage of the warmth on my belly.  And I get some Vitamin D!  That’s good for dogs too, right?!

IMG_0148

I guess we will be leaving Florida in about a week, and heading back to Wisconsin to visit Grandma and Grandpa.  I will miss the warmer weather, but I am ready to continue on in our adventures, and add some more states to my chart of the states I have pooped and peed in!

Take care everyone, and Happy Spring!

Busy Season, silly season

Hello everyone! It’s me again, Makena, the blogging dog!

makena blogging 2-09-2014

Keeping my peeps informed!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  I had a good turkey day, as my mom made a turkey breast in the crockpot.  I had to spend 4 long hours smelling that turkey….fortunately, a few pieces magically fell into my dish!

My parents have begun the crazy, busy season at Amazon, so I thought I would take the time to update the blog.  They have now started the 59 1/2 hour work weeks.  They were not going to do these, but then Amazon again offered a $100 VISA gift card for each week that you work it.  And they said it is only for 3 weeks, so they can suck it up!  I really don’t like it, as it makes for long days for me.

With these long days, I have been limited on my play time in the park across the street.  It is dark when they leave, and dark when they get home.  One thing I have learned from my cat friends, is how to make your owners feel guilty. You can either ignore them, or poop outside the litter box.  Since I can’t do the latter,  I have been ignoring them, with great success.   They now make it a priority to play with me on their limited time off.

I do have a dog walker, Rob, that takes me out every day for a long walk.  I really appreciate it, as I don’t like to cross my paws, even if I have four of them.  It sure would have been nice if my buddy Fred would have picked me up on the way to Florida.  That would have been great!

We did have a  major crisis recently.  The dog food that I have enjoyed for my 8 1/2 years has been discontinued!  My parents went to the pet store to look for new food, but came back empty-handed.  Apparently they were too overwhelmed with the dozens of different brands, all claiming their food was the best for your pet.  And my mom noticed many of the brands are now “grain free”.  She is a label reader, and said the grain free products are also much higher in calories.   Since I just spent the past summer working off the 1/2 pound that I gained, she was concerned about the calories.

So she e-mailed Dr. Jodie, my doctor back in Wisconsin.  She recommended Natures Variety, which offers both a grain-free and a holistic blend, which has whole grains.  So my mom placed an order with my favorite website, Chewy.com, and I had a big package to open!  Christmas came early!

Chewy to the rescue!

Score!!!

I must say the chicken and brown rice is super tasty!!!!  And Nature’s Variety also makes peanut butter and banana flavored dog biscuits, that are excellent!  Thanks Dr. Jodie for the recommendations, and to Chewy for super fast delivery and much better prices than that place my parents are working for.

Hopefully, we will be in Florida soon.  My parents are hoping to be done on Saturday, December 19, but they have been told to expect to work until December 23rd.  That is what they have to commit to, in order to receive their end of season bonus ($1/hour for every hour worked).  Oh well, it should go by quickly!

Take care everyone!

“My” Summer Vacation

Hello everyone!  Did you miss me?  I know I have not blogged in a while, but “the Jack is back”!!  While my parents are busy starting up again with Amazon, I thought I would recap my summer vacation.

Keeping my peeps informed!

Keeping my peeps informed!

I know my parents had several posts regarding their adventures in Yellowstone National Park, but I have nothing to add, as I never went into the park.  It is really not a dog friendly park.  Dogs are only allowed where cars can go, and I know what parking lots look like!  I guess the rangers don’t want us little dogs to be appetizers for the bears.

However there is plenty of US Forest Service land in West Yellowstone, so I was able to go on plenty of walks in the woods.  As a matter of fact, I even lost over 1/2 pound this summer (unlike my parents).  My doctor would be proud of me, as he was concerned about my weight during my last visit!  Yes, I am back to a “lean, mean, playing machine!”

Homeroom at Madison Crossing, the place where my parents worked this summer, was very dog friendly, and I quickly learned where the treats were located behind the counter.  I visited several times, during our walks around town.

Thanks Pam!

Thanks Pam!

For those that have been following me for a while now, you may remember my parents purchased a 16 squeaker stuffed squirrel for me.

I diligently worked on destroying the squirrel this summer.  My parents were thrilled that this toy lasted over 6 months, but then decided the “dead” squirrel would make a good wig for me.  I was not amused!

Once they finished up their summer jobs, we started heading east, and we stopped at a nice rest area in Montana, which had the best pet area I have ever seen. It was all fenced in, and had a fire hydrant right in the middle of the area.  Lot’s of good smells!  Too bad all rest areas can’t be like this!

We stopped at Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota for a night.  My parents drove around the park loop, and I was able to check out (from the comfort of the truck) the prairie dogs.  My parents said I was not allowed outside of the car (another unfriendly dog park), so I could only view the hundreds of “park dogs” from the window.  I barked and squealed a lot, just to let them know I was in the area.

After a nice stop in MN visiting with Dan’s brother Gary and Julia at Camp Anderson West, we made it back to “Camp Meyer” (Dan’s sisters Linda and Doug).  It’s my favorite place, because I can run around off leash, and get plenty of treats and attention.  Since my parents were going to be busy with dentist/doctor and other appointments, my grandparents came down to take me to their place and spoil me for several days.  I was so excited to see them, that I fell down the stairs of our 5th wheel, and got a big cut above my eye.  So I was put on a “time out” for a little bit with an ice pack on my head.

ouch!

ouch!

Time went by so fast, and now my parents are starting their 3rd year at Amazon, this time in Jeffersonville, IN.  I’m sure my mom will be posting soon about that.  So I’m back to being in the camper for long days. Hopefully I can get some more treats and toys from this!

Take care everyone, and thanks for following along on my journey.  I’m starting year three on the road, and I am one lucky dog!

I hate fireworks!

Hello everyone, it’s me again!  And now that everything has quieted down, I thought I would give you a little update from the dog’s point of view.

Keeping my peeps informed!

Keeping my peeps informed!

The last few days have been super noisy here in West Yellowstone.  Apparently there are no laws regarding who can shoot off fireworks in Montana, and it seems everyone in town had a pretty good supply of noisemakers.  Saturday was the worst.  My parents had to work, so I was left alone with all the noise for most of the night. People were shooting off fireworks and firecrackers all over town. It takes awhile before it gets dark, so the town-sponsored fireworks did not start until 10:30pm, so my parents were home by then.  They took me out to try to get me to go potty, but as you can see by the photo below, I was so scared from all the prior noise that my tail was stuck between my legs!

I want in!!!

I want in!!!

What made this night extra scary for me is that we were parked right in the “blast zone!” The launch area for the fireworks was about 100 yards from our RV, right across from the US Forest Service land that I like to take my walks on.  We walked past to check out the area on my early morning walk on the 4th.

Too close for comfort, in my opinion!  But I did get some visitors, which briefly made me happy!  My parents co-workers, Tom and Ellen came by to watch.  Diane and Jerry, another work camping couple that my parents met, also stopped by later, to join in the “VIP viewing section”.  That’s what they called it…..I called it the scary, frightening section!  Notice how no one else is around on the sidewalk?  The entire street was blocked off, so only the few people living here could be in this area.

Dan, Ellen & Tom

Dan, Ellen & Tom

My mom took a lot of photos of the fireworks.  One misfired and landed about 75 feet away, which scared her.  She went into “fire marshal” detail to make sure the burning embers were out.  They said the show was quite spectacular, especially considering this is a town of 1200 people (during the off-season).  I will have to take their word for it, as I refused to come out of the RV until after 1:00am.  That’s how long it took before everyone in the area stopped shooting off more fireworks after the town’s show ended.

Enjoy the photos!

I need to lose 1/2 pound!

Hello everyone!  While my parents are busy waiting for their truck to get fixed, I thought I would update the blog.  For those new to the blog, I like to give a perspective on full-timing from the dog’s point of view!

Keeping my peeps informed!

Keeping my peeps informed!

While I was sad when we left Florida, I was eager for new sights, smells and places to pee.  I especially enjoyed our trip to North Carolina, because I had a big house to explore and play in.  Austin and Cole were eager to play with me, and throw my football.  Kids have so much more energy than adults do, so I get to play a lot longer with them.  They even wore me out!  Superhero’s can do that!

Cole & Austin

Cole & Austin

Cole even wrote about me in his school journal.  Perhaps his mom and dad can think about getting a dog??  Thank you Jodie and Chris for letting me come and play!

Cole's journal

Eventually we made our way back to “Camp Meyer”, which is my dad’s sisters house in Wisconsin.  I really enjoy my off-leash time at Doug and Linda’s house, especially when the popcorn fairy magically leaves a few pieces of popcorn on the floor.  While I was hanging with my gnomies this year, a strange thing happened.  This little baby popped into the picture, and I was no longer the center of attention:(

Hanging with my gnomies

Hanging with my gnomies

Baby Ellie seemed to upstage me, but I am hopeful she will get bigger and I can teach her how to throw the football to me!  Congrats to Kyle and Lauren and their first child!

I need attention!

I need attention!

My parents took me down to the Milwaukee area to hang with my cousins, and get my doctor’s appointment.  The doctor was not happy that I have gained 1/2 pound since my last visit.  This may not sound like a big gain, but he is being pro-active, and I appreciated that!  He didn’t comment on how much weight my parents have gained since Amazon, but the two are related!  They promised the doctor they would get back into the habit of daily walks for me.  The doctor also wanted to have my teeth cleaned, but my parents are hesitant to do this, as they would have to put me under.  They have heard about other dogs that did not make it through a routine cleaning, so they are afraid to do it.

On the positive side, after my visit, my parents stopped at the pet store and bought me some new footballs, and a box of dental chews!!!  WooHoo!!  Treats and toys!   Thanks you doctor!!  I am really liking these, and my parents hope they work!  They also bought a toothbrush and toothpaste….we’ll see how that goes!  I did get to spend a few days with my grandparents, and they took me for daily walks and lots of playtime!

yummy!

yummy!

If you ask any full-time RVer, they will say it can be easy to lose track of what day it is.  I have no idea about the days of the week, but I do know about the seasons.  It should be warm, warm, cool and a little cooler.  But I was all mixed up yesterday when I woke up to this nonsense!  Who put all this snow in my play area at the campground?  Yuck!

What???

What???

But at least my parents are still getting me out to play, so I can lose my 1/2 pound!  I think we will be ‘hitching up’ soon, and getting out of this crazy weather to head west for the summer.  I am looking forward to more areas to play, and I hear there is a lot of wildlife to see (from the comfort of my parents truck)!

Take care everyone!

Blog Post 100 – again stolen by the dog

Hi everyone, it’s me again, Makena.  For the new followers, I like to occasionally steal my parents blog and write about living in an RV from a dog’s perspective.

After my mom’s last post about Amazon, I heard her comment that was post #99.  Since 100 is a pretty big number, I knew it was time for me to post again, since I managed to steal the 50th post.

My turn to post!

My turn to post!

I have been enjoying my time in Florida.  It has been full of presents, sunshine, and best of all, visitors!  And it is nice not having that  alarm clock scaring me half to death at 5am.  A perfectly good night of sleep is ruined by that screeching ‘beep, beep’ noise, followed by my mom’s grumbling.

My Christmas wishes came true – I had some really nice presents to open.  Nice to see my parents use those gift cards on things other than gas and groceries!  I really enjoy opening presents.  My parents made me sit patiently staring at my package for a while.  Oh, the suspense!

Patiently waiting

I finally received the ‘okay’ command, and it was off to the races!

And much to my delight, I received a squirrel with sixteen squeakers!!!!!  Best gift ever!

Take a good look at the squirrels head…he was beheaded about 30 minutes later!  I was able to get three squeakers out, before I decided to take a nap.

My social calendar has been pretty full as well.  Unfortunately, I still have not figured out how to take photos, and my parents seem to forget as well, so I don’t have photos of everyone that has stopped over.  But I was very excited when Fred and Donna stopped over.  We first met them the day after we picked up our 5th wheel, at a Heartland Owners Rally.  They, along with George, Iris, Gary and Pam took my parents under their wing and they had a fun and educational week together.  It was nice catching up with them, and my parents had a nice BBQ dinner with them – no doggie bag for me though 😦

My pals Steve and Joan, from Crazy Horse also stopped by.  They were home for Christmas to visit their family, and are now back in Lake Mead for the winter, where they do some volunteer work.

Steve and Joan

Steve and Joan

Tom and Ellen, co-workers from Amazon, also stopped over. They were also kind enough to invite my parents over to Ellen’s daughters house for a fantastic Christmas dinner.  Again, no doggie bags for me.  I think my cousins Rudy and Reagan need to teach me the fine art of stealing people food from the counter!  They also got together at a Tiki Bar near Clermont to watch the sunset together.  But it was a cloudy day, so not much of a sunset (serves them right for not bringing me along!)

Tiki lounge

Karen and Al, also fellow Amazon workers, stopped by as well for lunch, and Disney planning.  We will all be going to Disney the first week of February, so they dropped off some DVD’s for my parents to watch.  My mom is pretty clueless about all these Disney characters so she has a lot of homework to do.

The park we are in now has a fenced in dog area, so I have been able to get out and play almost every day!!  It’s not a pretty dog park, but it’s a great use of space right along the fence.  I wish more parks would do this, as I have a lot of energy to burn off.

And when I am not busy playing outside, I watch these super noisy sandhill cranes go by every day.  They are bigger than me, so I keep a safe distance!

Well that pretty much brings you up to date with my social life.  Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Years!

My parents lied….

Hello everyone, I am back to give the “dog’s perspective”.

Keeping my peeps informed!

Keeping my peeps informed!

Two weeks ago, I  noticed my parents packing up our stuff in the 5th wheel.  I became very excited, and promptly did my part by sitting all day by the door, so they would not forget me.  When they told me to “kennel up” I happily sprinted into the back seat of the truck, and settled down in my kennel, dreaming of warm and sunny Florida.  They promised me we would be going there after Amazon.  When they stopped and opened up my crate, I figured we were stopping at one of those doggie rest stops, where I get to pee everywhere.

And then I realized, we were in another campground.  Hmmmm.  I thought we were going South to Florida, but somehow ended up going North.  To Indiana.  In December??  Yikes!

Now my parents tell me they did this because of a big bonus that Amazon offered.  I better be getting some new toys and treats out of that bonus.  Especially since they did not consult me in this decision.  And now they are working 11 hour days too?  They leave when it is dark, and return after dark, so my play time has been very limited.

The only good part of this, is my new dog walker.  She takes me for 30 minute walks every day in the park across the street!  And she likes to jog, so I finally have someone to jog with.  My mom said she will only run if her life depends on it.

My dog walker leaves a daily “report card” for my parents, so I have to be on my best behavior.  The first thing they do when they get home, besides petting me, is read that note.  Puts lots of pressure on me to behave, but I try my best!

I have been trying to make some new friends, on those rare days off that my parents have.  Here is me with my new friend, Snowflake.  Yes, she is a cat, but I find that cats don’t like to sniff my butt like dogs do.  I am starting to not be afraid around her.

making new friends

THE END IS IN SIGHT

My parents just finished up a 59 1/2 hour work week.  Seems Amazon offered all their employees a $100.00 VISA gift card, for anyone volunteering to do that.  They have been pretty exhausted at night.  They told me today that next Saturday, December 20, will be their “release” day from Amazon.  All the Camperforce will be heading out on Sunday….yay….off to Florida!!!!

But then they informed me they signed up for another 59 1/2 hour work week.  Seems people are buying lots of slippers, socks, bathrobes, watches and jewelry, so they are very busy at their fulfillment center.  And they need another big push this week, so they again offered $100.00 VISA gift cards to all employees that work the crazy amount of hours.  My parents tell me the 1/2 day is a piece of cake, but since I am not allowed to eat cake, I have no idea what that means.

According to my math, with the $400 in gift cards plus extra overtime money, my parents should be able to buy a lot of treats and toys for me.  After all these long days of staring out the window waiting for them, I am exhausted and deserve a reward!!

Back by popular demand!

I know, I know, it’s been awhile since I have posted a blog update!  For those new to the blog, it’s me, Makena, the blog writing Jack Russell Terrier!  Occasionally, I like to post an update to keep everyone updated on life in an RV, from the dogs point of view.

Keeping my peeps informed!

Keeping my peeps informed!

Once again I find myself back in Kentucky, with the promise that we will be able to go somewhere warm again for the winter.  I had a great time back in Wisconsin at Camp Meyer, visiting with everyone.  I did get to spend a few days up at my grandparents, where I was able to convince them I needed to play outdoors with my football at least 10 times a day!!  Even if you are just a dog, grandparents are still the easiest to swindle!

My parents did find someone to let me out on the days they are working at Amazon, so I don’t have to cross my paws for over 10 hours.  That keeps me relaxed, so I can find time to work on the bone that I received from Margaret, my parents co-worker at Crazy Horse.  It’s delicious!  Thanks again Margaret!

yummy!

I think my parents must feel guilty for leaving me alone all day, because I did get a new toy, which I promptly destroyed!  Toys with squeakers don’t stand a chance with me!

I’m happy that my parents are not so busy touring on their days off, like they did this summer, as it allows for more snuggle time.  There is a nice open field behind our 5th wheel that I am occasionally allowed off-leash to play some football.  However I am really looking forward to when we hitch up and go south for the winter.  Hopefully they will find me some nice parks to play in, as I’m getting a bit restless here with my parents working all those hours.

Take care for now everyone!  Make sure to give your pets hugs everyday, and enjoy the time you have with them!

While my parents are away…

Keeping my peeps informed!

Hi Everyone! I know I haven’t blogged in over a month, so I thought I would do a quick update, while my parents have been busy playing tourist again, during the 4th of July weekend (what are they thinking, going out in that madness?!)

Last time we were “home”, my mom was showing my cousin Reagan my blog on the Ipad, so I know I need to keep my cousins updated!

Reagan follows the blog

Reagan follows the blog

The park we are staying at is nice, from my point of view. There are only a few other dogs staying here, but they don’t live near me, and they don’t come over to sniff me, if you know what I mean!!

There is no designated ‘off leash’ area, which is a bummer, but my parents have been taking me over to the tent camping area to play football (yay!!!) when no one is around. They talked with the other campers who are parked nearby, and no one has objected to me being off leash for 5 minutes a day so I can run around and play catch.

I was a bit concerned when a whole group of Boy Scouts arrived, but then they set up all their tents on the other side of the campground. Whew! That would have interfered with my play area.

Boy Scouts tent camping

The one thing that I don’t like about the Black Hills area is the weather! It seems to rain every other day. And there are always thunderstorms and hail to go with the rain! I just get so scared, especially with the hail – it is too noisy! And for those that have been following my blog for awhile now, you know that I have been unable to find a “safe” place to hide in the 5th wheel. First I was banned from the shower…

Then from hiding under the recliner…

I really think whoever designs these recreational vehicles, should consider making a little cubbyhole where dogs and cats can hide out in bad weather. My dad thinks I should get some puppy headphones, so I won’t hear all the noise!

Other than that, I haven’t been up to too much. My parents have taken me out on a few long walks on the Mickelson Trail, but they are worried that I will do a ‘stop, drop and roll’ on the occasional horse poop that I discover along the trail!! (Remember this photo when I was left unattended for a few minutes?!)

I did have a visitor the other day, Mia, which I enjoyed. I first met Mia last summer at the Heartland Owners Rally in Goshen, IN. Her parents, George and Iris, are visiting the area and went out to lunch and to explore Custer State Park for a few hours with my parents. Now I’m just waiting to visit with Cooper, so Fred and Donna need to venture out this way!

I hope everyone is doing well! If you get a chance, please come and visit me, as I love belly rubs!!

Keeping my peeps informed!

Keeping my peeps informed!

I woke up this morning and my mom was staring out the window, mumbling.  In my seven short years, I have learned that is never a good sign.

But first, a little background.  We left warm and sunny Florida on Wednesday, April 9 and I happily took a nap in my kennel in the back seat of the pickup truck, dreaming of more places to play.  We seemed to stop every few hours for potty breaks, but then got back in and kept driving and driving.  Three days, 1480 miles later, we arrived back at my most favorite place, “Camp Meyer” in Hortonville, Wisconsin.  Several acres of nothing but green grass to room around and play!!  And, unlike most campgrounds, I am allowed full access to the “clubhouse”!  Sometimes I even take a nap on the owners bed.  I really appreciate Aunt Linda and Uncle Doug letting me stay here for a few weeks before we go off to South Dakota.

For a few days, I was able to go out and play and run wild, as the weather was pretty good.  But then the mumbling started this morning….and next thing I know my mom is getting out my Wisconsin Badger sweater…yikes!  Although it keeps me warm, I am not a big fan of it, and didn’t understand why she was chasing me around the camper trying to put it on.  It’s been so warm….but this is Wisconsin…

Not happy:(

Then the door opened, and I felt a cold breeze, and I started mumbling as well.  What in the world happened??  I thought it was Spring?
